The ‘Oscars’ of Indian cinema, the IIFA Weekend awards ceremony opened today in the island nation’s capital Colombo. Attended by a host of Indian cinema stars it is being promoted by Sri Lanka as an event to bolster its war torn economy after suffering nearly three decade of violence. The separatists were defeated by the island’s military last May and the economy is slowly picking up. The IIFA fashion show will be followed by a cricket match between the Indian stars and the Sri Lankan team on Friday and also with a Business forum. Certain sections of the South Indian film fraternity in Tamil Nadu have urged a boycott of the event but it is going ahead as scheduled.
