Muthu Tharanaga Sri Nelupuli Peiris, who goes by the stage name Muthu Tharanga, commenced her carrier initially as a dancer. She went on to become a popular model and an actress. She has won many pageants such as Capri Queen and Miss Sri Lanka during the past few years. Muthu had her education at the Roman Catholic School Kadawatha before joining Holly Family Convent Kerimatiyagara. After her O/Ls, she joined Channa and Upuli’s dancing class and studied oriental dancing. Due to the influence of another student who came to the dancing class, she took to modeling.

Following are excerpts of an interview with Peiris.
Q:What are you doing these days?
A: I have taken a long vacation, which was a couple of months. Nonetheless I have been chosen to act in Janaka Perera’s second film which will be starting this month. I also acted in the film ‘Sudu Hansi’ which is directed by the same director who directed ‘Wasuda’. I have also acted in 7 tele-dramas which are to be released in the near future.

Q:How did you begin acting?
A:At first, I went to study dancing under Channa Wejewardena and singing under Siril Nandasiri. In Channa Wejewardena’s class I met a modelling instructor who helped me enter the modelling field through which I acquired fame. Then I got invited for many TV advertisements. It was during this time that I was introduced to Sinesh Bandara Dissanayka who selected me for his first film. That is how I began acting.

Q:Your first love was singing, so why did you start acting?
A:I never planed to become an actress. It was something that I never expected. But I must accept that I have been concentrating more on acting than singing because I believe that it takes time and effort to create good songs that can be appreciated by my fans. Anyway my first love is singing. I have always loved that and always will. I will never give up singing.

Q:Are we going to see an album from you soon?
A:Well I have never thought about that. Creating an album means a lot of work, so I personally believe that I must take some time to make good songs that can be loved by my fans. Many of my friends tell me to do an album. Some even come and give me songs but I have not shown a keen interest for it. Recently I did a duet with Rukshan Mark and I am hoping to do couple of tracks in the future

Q: Tell me something about your family?
A:My father’s name is M.D.B Peiris. He is now in retirement. My mother’s name is Rita Juliet Peiris. I am the eldest in a family of two girls. My younger sister Harshani is married to a businessman and has two children.

Q: What do you think about the support that your mother gives you?
A:She has given me a lot of help by coming with me everywhere I go. I take this opportunity to thank my mother for the support that she has given me. My father and my sister have also helped me in the best possible ways. They are my critics at home. So my whole family has helped me tremendously in my work.
