Veteran film maker Titus Totawatta dies

Veteran film director, screen writer and editor-Titus Thotawatte passed away at a private hospital a short while ago after a prolonged illness. He was 82.

Mr. Thotawatte struck out as a film director and editor with Chandiya in 1965, where the late actor Gamini Fonseka starred in the first villain role of Sinhala cinema.

He later went on to direct and edit 22 films during his long and distinguished contribution to the Sinahala cinema.

Mr. was also the recipient of a National Media Award for his contribution to the TV media Sri Lanka.

Later in the 1980s and 1990s he dubbed English cartoons such Bugs Bunny, and Doctor Dolittle into Sinhala for Sinhala audiences. These continue to be aired on Sinhala TV to date. He also created puppet characters like Eluson.

In 1980, Mr. Thotawatte wrote and directed the popular children’s movie Handaya which was adjusted the Best Picture at the Sarasaviya Film Festival.

He was a past student of Ananda College in Colombo and the Matara Technical College.

Veteran film maker and TV personality Titus Thotawatte passed away at a private hospital yesterday at the age of 82. He was well known for the children’s TV programmes and for his contribution to the cinema.

Titus has done several popular and excellent Sri Lankan feature movies in the 1960s and 1970s. He was an old boy of Ananda College, Colombo. “Chandiya“was his first film and he also directed “Kauda Hari”, “Thewata”, and “Hara Lakshaya” that became box office hits.

Thotawatte wrote the screenplay and directed the popular children’s movie “Handaya” which won the Best Film award at the Sarasaviya Film Festival. In the 1980s and 1990s, he dubbed English cartoons such as “Bugs Bunny” and “Doctor Doolittle” into Sinhala.
His remains lie at No, 292/6, Nawala Road, Rajagiriya. Funeral arrangements will be notified later.
