Sri Lanka’s Digital Television Project Targets December 2028

A December 2028 target has been reported for Sri Lanka’s digital terrestrial television project. The transition concerns broadcast infrastructure, with household equipment and rollout details still important questions for viewers.

Sri Lanka’s Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting project is expected to deliver its first digital television experience in December 2028, according to a Daily FT update published on 1 October.

The date is a project target. The brief update does not establish that every household will receive the service on that day, or that existing analogue broadcasts will end immediately.

The project’s technical background

Japan International Cooperation Agency has supported Sri Lanka’s terrestrial television digitisation. In July 2023, JICA documented the handover of ISDB-T technical standards for the project.

JICA describes the standard as supporting high-quality video, sound and data broadcasting for fixed and mobile receivers. Its support spans technical cooperation and the broader shift from transmission to reception.

What the target means for viewers

The important consumer questions will concern coverage, compatible receiving equipment and the sequence of the transition. A national project date by itself does not answer whether a particular television needs additional equipment.

Viewers should wait for model-specific compatibility and service information before assuming that an existing set must be replaced.

Watch for a practical rollout plan

A clear public timetable would help households understand when services reach their area and what preparation, if any, is necessary.

For now, December 2028 provides a milestone to follow. Detailed coverage plans, receiver guidance and any formal analogue switch-off arrangements will be separate announcements that need to be assessed on their own terms.
